Understanding the Metals in Your Jewelry: What “Nickel-Safe” Really Means
Share
If you have sensitive skin, choosing the right jewelry can feel like a guessing game. At Worn Her Way, we want you to feel confident about what touches your skin, especially when you're wearing our beads, charms, and chains close to your wrist or neckline.
Stainless Steel: 304 vs. 316
We primarily use 304 and 316 stainless steel, both known for durability and resistance to tarnish. The difference? 304 stainless steel is a strong, reliable option used in most of our spacer beads and decorative finishes. 316 stainless steel, sometimes called surgical steel, contains added molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance. This makes it ideal for sweat, moisture, or humid climates.
Both are nickel-safe, which means any trace nickel is bonded tightly into the metal and is unlikely to leach or cause irritation for most people.
Nickel-Safe Does Not Mean Nickel-Free
You’ll see us use the term nickel-safe instead of nickel-free. Why? Because “nickel-free” is regulated in some regions and doesn’t always mean zero risk. Nickel-safe means the metal is designed not to release nickel at harmful levels. Most of our components, including all stainless steels and plated brass cores, meet or exceed common safety standards.
Plated Metals: Style with Care
Some decorative beads feature silver, gold, or platinum plating over a brass core. These look beautiful and layer well, but they may wear faster over time with exposure to water, sweat, or perfumes. If you have very reactive skin, we recommend sticking with plain stainless steel components or rotating plated beads in shorter wear sessions.
Care Tips for Sensitive Skin
Wipe beads with a soft cloth after wear. Avoid prolonged moisture or direct chemical contact. Store separately to reduce wear on plated finishes. If you're unsure, test a new piece for a few hours before extended wear.
